
Horse and companion-animal owners are seeing more and more information about regenerative and orthobiologic therapies for their animals. These therapies work with the body’s own biology to manage pain and injury, and they hold real promise. They elicit a variety of biologic responses, such as stimulating growth factors and anti-inflammatory mediators and even the regeneration of tissue (Angelone, 2017).
In 2018, North America held the largest share of regenerative-medicine revenue and was projected to continue leading the market. One 2020 forecast expected the regenerative therapy market to grow from 13.6 billion USD to 72.6 billion USD by 2026, a compound annual growth rate of 24.2%, driven by expected impact on conditions in oncology, neurology, orthopedics and potentially certain genetic diseases. That funding is also driving research in adjacent fields, including the orthobiologics used in equine practice (MarketWatch, 2020).
Various regenerative therapies have been used to provide targeted biologic treatment for ligament and tendon injuries. Because of the breadth of relevance and the substantial developments in tissue engineering, stem cell therapy, gene therapy and more, regenerative therapies will continue to gain awareness and support (Evans, 2019).
As more research is conducted, veterinarians and scientists are finding more options within these therapies to manage pain, inflammation and musculoskeletal injuries in horses, particularly those in high-performance careers. Universities and research organizations, including Boise State University, help propel this growth by conducting studies that test different regenerative approaches and techniques before they reach the market (Marycz, 2018).
